Why So Many Americans Just Took a Massive Hit to Their Credit—and What That Means for Borrowers

It’s happening quietly, but the impact is loud: millions of Americans are seeing their credit scores fall—hard. And for many, it all ties back to one thing: missed student loan payments.

After years of pauses and extensions, student loan payments have officially resumed. But not everyone got the memo. Some borrowers were unaware payments had restarted. Others assumed their deferments or disaster extensions were still in place. And unfortunately, the consequences have been severe.

Massive Hit: 100+ Point Drop Overnight

According to recent data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 2.2 million borrowers experienced credit score drops of over 100 points in the first few months of 2025. For over 1 million of them, the fall was even steeper—150 points or more. These are the kinds of drops usually associated with bankruptcies.

Worse still, many of those affected had previously maintained decent or even strong credit. Roughly 2.4 million people who were once eligible for car loans, credit cards, or mortgages have now slid into “subprime” territory. That means higher borrowing costs, denied applications, and fewer financial options.

Why Is This Happening to Borrowers?

When payments restarted, many borrowers missed the notices. Some had outdated contact info. Others overlooked voicemails or assumed another pause was in effect. Whatever the reason, missing even a few payments—sometimes as little as $30—was enough to send scores spiraling.

And once your score drops, climbing back up is slow. Even after catching up on payments, it can take years to recover.

The Ripple Effect

Low credit scores don’t just block loans. They make life more expensive. Insurance premiums, cellphone plans, even background checks for jobs or apartments can all be affected.

And the timing couldn’t be worse. With interest rates already near 20-year highs and the cost of living stretched thin from inflation, these added financial burdens are piling up fast. It’s becoming harder for everyday Americans to secure basic needs like transportation or housing, simply because of a misstep in their student loan account.

What We’re Seeing on the Ground

Borrowers of all ages are affected, but data shows people over 40 are most likely to be behind. This suggests that it’s not just young graduates who are struggling—it’s also working adults trying to juggle rising costs and household responsibilities.

Many, like a woman in Georgia whose score dropped from the high 700s to the low 400s, are seeing years of careful credit-building erased. One missed email, one misunderstood due date, and major life plans—like buying a car or moving—are suddenly out of reach.
