IDR Recertification Just Got Complicated—Here’s What You Need to Know

Let’s be honest: IDR recertification has turned into a bit of a mess. After months of delays and legal drama surrounding the SAVE plan, we finally have a little clarity—but there are still some big questions hanging in the air.

The bottom line? What happens next with your student loan recertification depends on two things:

  • Whether or not you’re currently in SAVE forbearance.

  • Whether your recertification date falls before or after March 17, 2025.

Here’s how it all breaks down—without the legal jargon.

If You’re in SAVE Forbearance

Good news (kind of): Everyone in SAVE forbearance had their recertification pushed out by a year. But hold up—don’t get too comfortable. If the SAVE plan gets struck down in court (and we’re watching that closely), the Department of Ed could reverse course and accelerate those deadlines. In that case, you'd likely need to jump to another IDR plan and submit updated income fast.

Thinking of switching out of SAVE forbearance? Applications are open again, which is a good sign—but it’s still unclear how quickly they’ll be processed. There’s a court hearing coming up that could get things moving, and we’re staying optimistic. In the meantime, TitanPrep is here to help you stay ready and confident, so when things do shift, you’ll be one step ahead.

Not in SAVE Forbearance? Here’s What You Need to Know

If you’re on PAYE, IBR, or ICR, here’s how they’re handling your recertification depending on your anniversary date:

  • Before March 17, 2025 & already processed? You’re locked in. Your new payment is set.

  • Before March 17, 2025 & NOT processed yet? They’ll push your next recert date out a full year.

  • Before March 17, 2025 & you didn’t submit at all? If your payment jumped, you’ll need to submit now to get back to an income-based amount.

  • After March 17, 2025? They’ll move your recert date out a year.
